"TREE HOUSES" Oil on panel

PUSHED AROUND
some malachite green alkyd oil
with a very poor brush
to draw the tree.

Lettering lets you know where I'm going with this.

Some of the tenants with a view
to the property.

"GARDENERS"

ONE
of three new mixed media paintings
from my studio. On sanded paper.
This started out as a completely
different subject.

The spiral on the left melon
is all that is left of the original design.
I repeated the device on the other melons:
one for each bird.

I like this little guy up top. There's a bit of 23 carat gold
at his feet.

"RAIN BIRDS"

'Been painting
watercolors on paper
over a ground of sanded acrylic.

I also have a batch of new brushes
They're liners which hold lots of paint
and are usually employed
for pin-striping.

Here's a detail of the 9 x 12 work before completion.

I've laid in some gold and bright white markings
after this shot.

IBIS design...

Corel Painter.
I love having no india ink on my fingers
after drawing.
This started out as three black blobs
and then the birds were removed with different brushes.

"CLOUD MOUNTAIN" collage series

"CLOUD MOUNTAIN"

Fourth in
a series of 4 collages.
I've been thinking about this group's parts at night.
I wanted the brushwork to be
subordinate to the strong collage contrasts.
Searched for (and found by studio excavation) my good gouache pigments
to put down the gray birds.
Cloud swirls and bright whites
are type correction film.

These are in double rag mats; 11 x 14 inch format.
I think I've found the perfect frame stock for these, and ordered a quartet.

"TWO PEEPERS"

"TWO PEEPERS"

on a blue background.
How have I put white into this tiny piece?
Let's see: the birds are transferred
typo film. The mosaic pattern is tiny
acrylic brushwork.
Oh yeah; I cut through the blue background
to make the strigil designs up top.
A little colored pencil colors the top bird and triangle below him.

About 6 x 4.5 inches.

"SOUTHWARD"

THE WEATHER
in Key West is breezy and bright.
Parrotheads are in town for the sun and music
and it's nicely social at our gallery.

As my other recent posts,
this is a smaller work on paper board.

Embossing, oil pastel, watercolor and ink.

'A GALLANT'

A TWO-PIECE COLLAGE.
Watercolor on acrylic for the birdies.
Acrylic over oil pastel
for the striated background.
Typo film for white designs.

'THREE FISHERS'

Watercolor over acrylic and transparent gesso.

'TREE HOUSE'

'TREE HOUSE'
is very mixed media
on an unusual support.
I've made use of tissue glued to
an acrylic panel. 16 x 20 inches.

The tissue squares originally held
the gold leaf I use in my work.

I painted a bunch of them with tree/leaf designs. The acrylic panel was too scratched for display.

Metallic paints decorated with type correction film.

Details in gouache over abstract acrylic.

'PICNIC'

'PICNIC' before and after:
just tweeked and
lacquered.

Little things added?
A white line on the wing.
A dark line on the bill.

By the way, this piece is painted on cheesecloth
adhered to rag board with acrylic gesso.

A NEAR PAIR....

AND...

THESE TWO
paintings are oil and acrylic on paper.

Thats 'GRATIS' up top
and
'THE LITTLE GUEST'
surrounded by red.

Each measures about 6 X 14 inches.

COLLAGE TECHNIQUES

'NEW DAY SONG'
got its start from some block-printed cotton
I picked up here in Key West.
Quite varied patterns on one yard:
the sun/flower, geometric cross forms and
the little stylized bird profiles all
jumbled into a loose grid.

I scanned and printed the designs in different sizes
and tints. Then I assembled the collage with other
small paintings, embossings and drawings.

Have a look at this detail:

Left to right:

Type-correction film transfer on acrylic.

Scanned multiple birdies.

Type correction film on purple acrylic.

Embossed copper (line drawing flipped over)
with 23 carat gold.
Below that a tiny acrylic on oil pastel
with leaf and wing details scratched out.

The red, dotted crosses are
the original fabric.

'SUN HAT'

'SUN HAT'
is a new acrylic triptych. Each panel is 12 inches square.

The viewer sees a cyclist riding
in front of the sun;
a blurry figure on a mechanical
silhouette.
The sun and hint of another wheel
is a design of 23 carat gold on acrylic.

The other animate objects are
a pair of foraging birds who
have found some berries.

An iron chair sits in a formal garden.
The whole group has a tinted palette which
is subordinate to the acrylic drawings.
