'SINGERS' enhanced

I found (in my many layered studio) the antique sheet music I needed to surround the tiny watercolors of singers from previous posts. The paper is fragile and certainly not archival, so I scanned and printed it onto good rag paper. On one of these I lettered appropriate titles (TRIO, FOR THREE VOICES, FOR 3 VOICES, etc.) in nut-brown ink using old crow-quill pens. I like the way the ink bleeds and is still legible. And by now you know my interest in calligraphy and letter forms. The prints of these collages will be enhanced with these titles chosen at random, making each print unique.

A double rag mat will hold the collage away from the frames's glazing.

uneven points.

This is two layers of paper. The top layer is a cutout of singers
which has been leafed in 23 carat gold over a layer of tinted gesso.
Underneath is paper with many layers of paint and then
some celestial orbs in acrylic and type-correction film.
Gold is NEVER lacquered
but the background is.

AS you see, I paint to the edge of the paper in this series.
I mount the paper on a larger piece of Strathmore Bristol paper
and that gets mounted on an archival 16 X 20 board.
This keeps the art safe until it's new owners can have it framed.
The Bristol carries the title and my signature in pencil.

'TRAIL'

MY first submission for ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY. This week's word: 'Trail' immediately made me think of snails. In Painter 11.....

MIXED MEDIA FIGURE STUDIES

HERE ARE the figure studies from our last session at the Key West Armory. One looks like Jack Benny. The other drawing is larger on a pre-painted acrylic background. I carry a bottle of titanium white acrylic in my sketch bucket and smeared some behind the figure for contrast.

DOGS

I'VE DECIDED TO quit fighting the surface of these prepared papers and just PAINT on them.

I'm low on original, simple dog paintings in the gallery and started a whole new batch on these beee-utiful backgrounds. The 'black' pigmnet is a mixture of acrylic based paints and mediums and ink.

Figure tweeked...

I like this figure drawn over two different values; it looks like he's climbing out of a bad situation or overcoming something. The last addition was the scrolling vine; it sets him in a landscape.

LIFE DRAWING SESSION 2

These two minute gesture drawings had a more receptive surface for the compressed charcoal.
I decided to flip my oil/acrylic tinted paper over; hence, the abstract lines and spatters
accompany the figure. I like that!

I wanted to establish the brow line on the greener drawing; he looks like an angry wrestler.

TWEEKED

Can you see the difference in the two painting/drawings from yesterday's post?

I added a white drawing to each one to place the figures in a setting and add a monogram signature.

To do this I used a sheet of Corectype (is that what it's called?) and a sharp pencil....

LIFE DRAWING SESSION 2

THE SECOND session at the Key West Armory went less smoothly. The model showed up ill ( I moved to the other side of the room) then left. R'. ,who is another artist , took his clothes off to model in her place; it was very nice of him!  I trust his nightly tuition was refunded....

One good thing is the low enrollment as the days warm up; we're down to locals and some are leaving soon for their summer hide-outs.


I had arrived with a stash of decorated papers layered first in oil pastel and then acrylic. My thought was that I could scratch out highlights by abrading the acrylic surface. I ended up fighting it most of the night as my compressed charcoal scratched the surface fro the get-go. But here are a couple of images of 2 minute sketches. CLICK HERE TO BUY.

Actually, this piece is called "TENNIS BALL BLUES" and this is its fourth or fifth rendition.


This time I decided to issue it as two limited editions of 100 giclee prints each. Two standard formats (11 X 14; 16 x 20 inches) are offered-  both on canvas.  CLICK HERE TO SHOP...

The prints are really more durably pigmented than the original. I'll number and sign them in acrylic.

I've mentioned on my website that I meet so many folks who have hounds nearly inseparable from their toys. This one waits for MOM or DAD to come home and play...and feed him, of course.
