Like stained glass....

Just playing in Illustrator again.

Makes me think of rose windows and old
stained glass.

Detail of window panel in Chartres.

Tissue Collage on Plexiglass

I adhered them to an acrylic pane (16 x 20)
which was too scratched to put in a frame.

This is the finished panel.

I pasted them down with Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish.
A totally random choice in a loose grid.

I did cut one or two into 'leaf' forms to fill in some of the gaps.

The tissue crinkles but can be smoothed out.
Air bubbles were pricked and flattened to the surface.

There's that one brush drawing (lower left) from a previous post.
I painted the reverse of the plexi' with satin black Rustoleum.

I'll post more about this as I work on top of the collage.

'SMART, TOO'

THIS
is the way people talk to their dogs.

Two pieces of random painted paper
make the simplest collage here.

Lettering in gouache with
acrylic for the dog, foliage and ball.

'FAMILY TREE'

'FAMILY TREE'
This collage has some nice textures of gouache
over acrylic.
Notice the sun becomes a design element; it is not the logical, brightest object.

'ASTRONOMER' (link)

'ASTRONOMER'
is stretched out under the night sky.

Collage of 4 painted papers
with acrylic, crayon and gold leaf.
Type-correction film for the white bits.

'TRANCE' (link)

(SOLD)

'TRANCE'
is a mixed-media-on-collage piece
made to show my affection for dogs
AND
to use up pretty, small pieces of painted paper
that fill my studio files
WHICH
also hold some really nice pre-cut
museum mats.

Acrylic, water-soluable crayons and pencils.
Flecked with type correction film on table and dog-tag.
The word forms are diluted gouache.

USE IT UP...

USING UP...
the gold-flecked tissues that support
sheets of 23 carat gold leaf.

USING UP....
my acrylics from the palette. I mixed them in a cup
with some flow medium and
painted dozens of
abstract 'leaf' forms to dry over night.
Then I flipped 'em over and
painted the reverse with pale acrylic washes
from the next-day's palette.

Here's a close-up of one:

They can be arranged as background collage elements
on paper or panel with gel medium.
Remember: they're acrylic and won't run.
I usually make sure the side with the gold is facing
up to sparkle.

HMMMMM; let's play with these twigs.

I dropped the image into Illustrator and fiddled with
the colors, contrast and rotation four times.
Here's another variation:

And here's a pattern made from four....
and my hands are still clean!

And another looking like Tapa cloth:

Whee!

'SUN HAT'

'SUN HAT'
is a new acrylic triptych. Each panel is 12 inches square.

The viewer sees a cyclist riding
in front of the sun;
a blurry figure on a mechanical
silhouette.
The sun and hint of another wheel
is a design of 23 carat gold on acrylic.

The other animate objects are
a pair of foraging birds who
have found some berries.

An iron chair sits in a formal garden.
The whole group has a tinted palette which
is subordinate to the acrylic drawings.

'STORIES' (link)

'STORIES'
is a little sparkly with gold.
The story teller is drawn with acrylic
over washes of acrylic or watercolor.
Color highlights in pencil or crayon
and white line work using
type correction film.

'Guess I'll always paint mermaids!

SEA BLOSSOM (link)

PAINTED PAPERS....
Heaps of them 'round here!
I put together more than two dozen collages yesterday.
Pleasant busy work.
They'll fit 20 very nice rag double mats in
a format measuring 11 X 14.

Above is a detail showing three butted together.
I added the leaf designs in acrylic, watercolor, gouache and
Derwent's inktense pencils and a little 23 carat gold.

The completed work for today.

Patterns and lines bridge
the connected papers
with their random backgrounds.

ILLUSTRATION FRIDAYS/ 'Lesson'

This week's suggested topic/word is 'Lesson'; here's a flying lesson.
Mini mixed media on rag board. 2008-ish.
